Retirement is certainly very different today compared to the time of our parents and particularly that of our grandparents. We are living in a time when a senior could become a movie star, singer, or an entertainer of another kind. They can go back to school and get a degree, or start a new business. The opportunities are almost endless.
Baby Boomers can volunteer their services in needy far off countries, or even move to another country to spend their retirement years full or part time. Many over 50s sell up home and head for the beaches of Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and other countries where they can live in the sun and stretch their retirement savings at the same time. They can still feel useful by helping out at orphanages, animal shelters or teaching children to speak English.
There are those that have reached retirement age that are parents of young children, they still have to put children through school and university. Some of these older parents are also grandparents. Regardless of being of retirement age many cannot consider quitting work while others are so financially dependent on them. I’m sure many of these aging parents didn’t see a second family in their retirement plans.
Being prepared for retirement financially is so important but unfortunately for many they will find their financial situation lacking. Whatever our financial situation we have to make the most of our opportunities. We always have choices to make. The main thing that we need is good health. That in itself is going to be the deciding factor in many of our other choices. Poor health could limit us when it comes to travel and activities.
It has always seemed that having time and money at the same time eludes most of us. We find if we work long and hard we may have some extra cash but no time to enjoy it or we are out of work, and have little or no income but lots of time on our hands. So if we are fortunate enough to be financially independent in retirement at last we have it made.
We can spend time on the golf course. We can even take golf lessons or get our own medicus dual hinge swing driver to improve our golf swing ready for that golf tour we planned to take in retirement. We can go on a luxury vacation or take our grandkids to Disneyland.
If we don’t have the financial means to travel far there are still lots of things that we can do closer to home. Maybe it’s time to discover what our own home town has to offer. If it is of interest to you visit museums, art galleries, and other places of interest. You can learn some new skills, check out the community center for art classes, learn a new language or whatever interests you. Besides keeping you involved and active your brain will thank you too. One of the best ways to keep our brain fit is by learning new things.
If you are already creative maybe you can develop that creativity into a way to make extra income by selling your wares. Maybe you can volunteer some time to teach others what you know. You don’t have to go to another country to volunteer; there are plenty of places that would be only too glad to have you volunteer right close to home.
If you’re going to be spending more time at home and in your garden make a hobby of it. Enjoy your personal space. Create a place where you can relax and invite your friends over for tea or coffee. Even if you don’t have a garden, bring some nature into your living space by adding some plants and maybe a couple of indoor water fountains to create that relaxing environment. It’s very important that we remain connected to friends once we retire; so many people leave behind friends when they leave their work place.
Don’t just leave life to chance, decide what you want and go for it!
